So, What Do You Do?
Is it just me, or is asking "What do you do?" a terrible way to get to know somebody?
If someone wants to know me personally, they should ask about my wife Alisha, my puppy Kobe, and my son, Jason. You can't understand the professional without understanding the person behind the role. Once you understand the person, you can begin to understand the career.
Actions Speak Louder Than Words.
Currently, I'm on the founding team at Symphoniq. I'm also a partner (on sabbatical) at Porthos Consulting, a boutique that focuses on sales acceleration, and I'm advising a number of startups, including a high-margin niche e-tailer, and an online gaming startup.
Prior to joining Symphoniq, I was the founder and Chief Marketing Officer for TargetFirst, an online marketing tools provider. While I didn't get rich quick, starting my own company was a great experience that I highly recommend, and I still sit on its board.
I started my career at D. E. Shaw & Co.. The time I spent there working on pioneering Internet businesses like United Online (Juno) and Merrill Lynch's Intelligent Technology Group (D. E. Shaw Financial Technologies) got me hooked on the entrepreneurial lifestyle.
Finally, I'm a firm believer in the continuing influence of education. I attended Stanford and Harvard Business School, and both continue to exert a powerful influence on my career today through the friends and knowledge that I gained.
